How much does it cost to go to Antarctica? A complete breakdown of the budget for Antarctic cruise tickets, airfare, hotels, and insurance from 2027 to 2029.
How much does a trip to Antarctica cost, including the ship ticket, international airfare, hotel, and pre- and post-trip itinerary? To answer this question, we first need to ask: if we roughly divide budgets into low, medium, and high, where would you categorize yourself?
If you're looking for the most affordable way to experience Antarctica, the total cost, including all expenses, will start from approximately USD 12,000 (about HKD 94,200 / TWD 382,000). If you prefer comfort without the extreme luxury, the total price starts from approximately USD 18,000 (about HKD 142,000 / TWD 573,000). For the ultimate luxury cruise experience, including the most expensive three-island itinerary in Antarctica, the total price starts from approximately USD 36,000 (about HKD 283,000 / TWD 1,145,000).
For the same destination, two people can spend three times as much. Where does this difference come from? And how can you choose your ideal trip within your budget? Below, we'll break down the budget step by step, so you'll know how much you need to prepare for your dream Antarctic trip.
Antarctic travel costs overview: What's included in the total budget?
The expenses of an Antarctic trip can be roughly divided into three categories.

boat ticketThe decisions that have the biggest impact on the budget include the itinerary, the type of ship to take, and the type of accommodation to stay in.
Airfare, South American stayThe second largest expense. There are no direct flights to South America from Hong Kong or Taiwan; at least one layover is required to reach the meeting city. To avoid flight delays, we recommend a layover of at least one day in South America before or after the trip, therefore accommodation and other expenses during this period need to be factored in.
Insurance, visas, equipment and miscellaneous expenses on boardIt accounts for the smallest portion of the budget, only about three percent, but it is still an essential part.
How much would it cost to travel to Antarctica on a low, medium, or high budget?
| low budget | medium budget | High budget | |
| Itinerary | Single island (Antarctic Peninsula) | Single island or double island | Triple Islands |
| departure month | Late October, November, or March | December to February | Unrestricted |
| vessel | Converting research vessels or expedition cruise ships | Adventure cruise ship | Luxury cruise ships |
| Room type | Multiple people or two people sharing a room | Sea view window room or terrace room | Terrace room or suite |
| Add-to-cart activity | No additional purchase | One or two items | Three items |
| Total Budget | Starting from approximately USD 12,000 | Starting from approximately USD 18,000 | Starting from approximately USD 36,000 |
Why is Antarctica so expensive?
Why is an Antarctic trip so expensive?
First, the Antarctic tourism season is from late October to March each year, so tourists only have less than five months to visit Antarctica. During the rest of the year, the sea ice is too thick to sail, and in winter, the polar night makes sailing dangerous, let alone sightseeing.
Secondly, Antarctic cruise ships have a lower passenger capacity. Because the Antarctic Treaty stipulates that a maximum of 100 people can be at the same landing point at any given time, we recommend that guests choose a cruise ship with a capacity of approximately 200 people to ensure sufficient landing time. In addition, Antarctic cruise ships must meet polar ice class standards to sail in Antarctic waters, hence their construction cost is significantly higher than that of ordinary cruise ships.
In addition, each shipping company has at least a dozen expedition members on board, including geologists, marine biologists, ornithologists, and photographers, who work on board for the entire season. Having multiple experts on-site naturally increases costs. Finally, because there are no supplies on the Antarctic shore, all food, fuel, and drinking water must be replenished in the cities where the ship embarks, and all garbage must be brought back. The ship must also be equipped with a doctor and a medical room.

Part One: Tickets 70-80% of the budget
Ferry tickets account for 70-80% of the total budget, making them the largest expense. The choices involved include the itinerary, departure date, purchase time, ferry company, and cabin type.
How to choose an Antarctic itinerary? Price comparison of single island, two islands, and three islands.
There are generally three types of Antarctic trips, and the more destinations you visit, the higher the price.
Single-Island ItineraryA trip to the Antarctic Peninsula is considered an "introductory route" to Antarctica. Glaciers, ice floes, penguins, seals, whales—all the classic Antarctic sights you can imagine can be experienced on a single island tour, starting at USD 9,000.

Dual-Island ItineraryBesides the Antarctic Peninsula, the itinerary will also include visits to South Georgia Island or the Falkland Islands. South Georgia Island offers the unique spectacle of thousands of king penguins crowding a single beach. The Falkland Islands are renowned for their diverse birdlife and unique island landscape, and offer opportunities to observe Magellanic penguins and rockhopper penguins. The two-island tour starts from USD 18,000.

Triple-Island ItineraryThis tour includes visits to the Antarctic Peninsula, South Georgia Island, and the Falkland Islands, offering a comprehensive view of Antarctica's diverse landscapes. Prices range from USD 18,000 to 35,000. If you only have one chance to visit Antarctica in your lifetime and don't want to miss out, then choose the three-island tour without hesitation.

Antarctic itinerary prices
| Itinerary | Days on the ship | Even the round-trip transportation | Key Highlights | Ferry ticket prices (off-season/peak season) |
| Single island (Antarctic Peninsula) | Approximately 10-12 days | Approximately 15-17 days | Gentoo penguins, cheekband penguins, Adelie penguins, seals, whales | USD 9,000 – 15,000 / USD 12,000 – 18,000 |
| Two islands (Antarctic Peninsula, South Georgia Island, or Falkland Islands) | Approximately 16-18 days | Approximately 21-23 days | South Georgia Island: King Penguin Colony Falkland Islands: Magellanic penguins, rockhopper penguins and island birds | USD 18,000 and above |
| Triple Islands | Approximately 20 days or more | Approximately 25 days or more | All of the above allow you to observe six different penguin species. | USD 18,000 – 35,000 |
How much more expensive is Fly Cruise?
Some shipping companies offer combined sea and air flights, taking charter flights across the turbulent Drake Passage, which is suitable for travelers prone to seasickness. Because of the charter aspect, combined sea and air flights are about USD 5,000 more expensive than regular trips and are also more susceptible to weather delays.

When is the cheapest time to travel to Antarctica? Price differences between peak and off-peak seasons.
The Antarctic tourist season runs from late October to March each year. The same place presents different appearances as the months change.

Price comparison for Antarctic tourism season from October to March
| departure month | Observable ecology | Price level |
| Late October | The thickest snow and the most complete ice formations; the penguin mating season. | More favorable (early season) |
| November | Penguins build nests and incubate eggs | More favorable |
| December – January | With the longest daylight hours, penguin chicks are being born one after another. | Most expensive (Christmas, New Year) |
| early February | As the penguin chicks molt and grow, the number of whales seen begins to increase. | On the expensive side |
| Late February – March | The best time of year for whale watching; penguins are gradually leaving, and the number that can be seen has greatly decreased. | More favorable (end of quarter) |
After deciding on the itinerary and departure month, the next step is to choose the cruise company and room type.
How to choose a cruise ship? Price differences between three cruise ships with different passenger capacities.
Different shipping companies have different positioning, so their prices also differ.
100-person boat:Converted from former Antarctic research vessels. Many have been renovated in recent years, with simple yet complete facilities, making them the most affordable option, starting at around USD 9,000. Smaller groups, no need for staggered landings, and the longest time spent ashore.

200-person boat: The type of boat chosen by most popular shipping companies. Those emphasizing adventure experiences start at around USD 10,500; those emphasizing luxury cruise experiences start at around USD 13,700.

500-person boat: Not recommended.According to the Antarctic Treaty, cruise ships carrying more than 500 passengers are not allowed to land on land and can only sail at sea for sightseeing.
The Antarctic Treaty stipulates that each cruise ship can only have 100 people ashore at a time. The smaller the passenger capacity, the longer each passenger's ashore time will be. We only recommend choosing ships with a capacity of around 200 people. Larger ships with more than 200 people may be unable to dock at some landing sites due to their size, causing passengers to miss some of Antarctic's most spectacular sights.
How much difference is there between the room types?
As for room types, the cheapest are the multi-person rooms on the research vessel. Among the double rooms, there are also ocean view rooms, balcony rooms, and deluxe balcony rooms, catering to different budgets. Each level up usually costs USD 1,500 or more.

Is it more expensive to travel alone?
There are three options for solo travelers. Some cruise lines offer same-sex room sharing at the same price as double room sharing; some cruise lines sell single rooms specifically for solo travelers; and some cruise lines only consider the number of rooms, so if you wish to travel alone, you must occupy a full room and pay a single surcharge of 1.5 to 2 times the cruise fare.
If you are interested in traveling alone, you can specify this when you inquire about prices. We can help you choose different solo travel options and also assist you in sharing a room with other same-sex travelers.
Early bird or last minute?
After deciding on the itinerary, departure month, and shipping company, the last factor that will affect the price is when to book.
Due to fluctuating prices for Antarctic cruises, the best deals are available through early bird bookings during the newly launched season. Most cruise lines offer early bird discounts for the following season, typically a year or more in advance, with discounts reaching [amount missing].60% off the original priceIf you wish to book a two-island cruise, a single-island cruise during peak season, a three-island cruise, a combined sea and air cruise, or other special routes, the best time to book is to purchase early bird discount tickets.
If you can't get an early bird ticket, you can consider waiting for a last-minute offer (up to three months before departure). If the cruise line still has seats available close to the departure date, they will offer a discount, which can be as high as [amount missing]. 50% offAs soon as we receive the Last Minute ferry tickets from the ferry company, we will distribute them via newsletter, Instagram, WhatsApp, and Facebook.
As the number of travelers to Antarctica increases, itineraries sell out faster, and cruise prices rise accordingly. For example, many itineraries to the three islands in the 2027-2028 season are already nearly sold out. Even though last-minute itineraries offer discounts, the trade-off is limited itinerary options and a limited variety of cabin types remaining. If you want an Antarctic itinerary that perfectly matches your needs, we recommend booking as soon as tickets are released.
Part Two: Approximately 20% of the budget for airfare and stay in South America
The biggest expense besides the ship ticket is the airfare to South America, and the time spent in South America before and after the Antarctic trip to make up for flight delays.

How much does a plane ticket to Antarctica cost? Departing from Hong Kong or Taipei.
Most Antarctic itineraries start at either Buenos Aires or Ushuaia in Argentina, or Santiago in Chile. There are no direct flights from Hong Kong or Taiwan; including layovers, a one-way trip takes at least two days, with round-trip economy class tickets starting at approximately USD 1,900.
Hotels before and after the Antarctic trip
Many cruise lines already include a pre-departure hotel stay in their itineraries. The first day is spent at the pre-departure hotel, the second day is spent flying to the port of embarkation, and the last morning is spent disembarking and then flying back to the meeting city.
Since flights from Hong Kong or Taipei to the meeting city require one or two layovers, delays in any of these leg of the journey could cause you to miss boarding. Furthermore, if your return flight with Air China is cancelled due to weather, your return date may also be postponed. Therefore, we recommend arriving one day earlier and departing one day later than planned. This means you will need to book two additional nights at your own expense. A four-star hotel in Buenos Aires starts at approximately USD 80 per night, and in Ushuaia, it starts at approximately USD 200 per night.
In addition to accommodation, meals and local transportation for the next few days should also be included in the budget. Assuming an extra day before and after the trip, approximately USD 100 per person should be allocated.
Having finally set foot on the other side of the world, many travelers plan to visit South American countries before or after their Antarctic trip, such as to see the magnificent Iguazu Falls or hike in Patagonia. The longer the stay, the higher the expenses will be.
We can also arrange customized South American itineraries before and after our Antarctic trip. Please see our South American itineraries on our website for details.

Insurance, equipment, and miscellaneous onboard expenses: these account for the smallest percentage, but cannot be omitted.
Finally, insurance, equipment, onboard miscellaneous expenses, and visas are also essential. Although the amount is the smallest, it is still an indispensable part of the budget.
What should you pay attention to when purchasing Antarctic travel insurance?
Travel insurance is mandatory for trips to Antarctica. Many shipping companies require passengers to submit proof of insurance coverage before departure.
The insurance needs to cover the Antarctic region and cruise travel, and also include emergency medical transport.
If medical care is required during an Antarctic trip, emergency medical transport by helicopter or private plane will be necessary. Therefore, insurance must not only cover the Antarctic region but also ensure emergency medical transport coverage of at least USD 250,000. Travel insurance meeting these requirements typically starts at around USD 70.
What clothes should I buy for Antarctica?
Most cruise lines provide windproof and waterproof polar coats free of charge, which you can take home after the trip. Snow boots for landing are also usually available for free rental. In addition, you will need to bring the following items.

Frequently Asked Questions about Antarctic Travel Costs
What's included in an Antarctic cruise ticket?
Most Antarctic expedition cruises are all-inclusive. The ticket price includes all shore excursions and inflatable boat tours, onboard accommodations and daily housekeeping, all meals, snacks and drinks (including alcohol), onboard lectures, rental of polar coats and waterproof boots, taxes and port fees, and baggage handling. Some cruise lines also include airport transfers, one night's stay at a pre-departure hotel, and onboard Wi-Fi.
What is NOT included in an Antarctic cruise ticket?
Personal travel insurance (must include Antarctic coverage and emergency medical transport of at least USD 250,000), waterproof pants, gratuities (included on some itineraries), international airfare, onboard internet, and all add-ons.
Can I pay for my Antarctic trip in installments?
Most Antarctic itineraries allow for a deposit upfront, with the balance due approximately 150 days before departure. Some cruise lines offer discounts for full payment upfront.
How many days of leave do I need to take to go to Antarctica?
Based on departures from Hong Kong, and considering an extra night before and after the trip: a single-island trip takes approximately 17 to 19 days, requiring approximately 13 to 15 days of leave; a two-island trip takes approximately 23 to 25 days, requiring approximately 17 to 19 days of leave; a three-island trip takes more than 27 days, requiring more than 21 days of leave. Add approximately one more day for each departure from Taiwan. The above figures exclude weekends; the actual number of days depends on the day of the week the departure sunset falls on and whether it crosses a public holiday.
Is it really easy to get seasick in the Drake Passage?
The Drake Passage is indeed rougher than other sea areas, and a one-way trip takes about two days. Doctors are on board, and most cruise lines provide seasickness medication; you can also consult your family doctor before departure. If you are particularly concerned, you can consider a combined sea and air itinerary, chartering a direct flight to King George Island to avoid this part of the journey.
Can children and the elderly go to Antarctica?
There is no upper age limit for Antarctic trips, but most cruise lines have a minimum boarding age of 8, while the minimum age for participating in additional purchase activities is 14. Regarding physical requirements, cruise lines require passengers to have basic mobility and be able to complete safety drills and emergency evacuation procedures independently, as well as board and disembark the inflatable boats. If you have concerns, it is recommended to consult your family doctor to assess whether your physical condition is suitable for Antarctic travel.
Set foot on Antarctica. It's no longer out of reach.
